Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a statement.

Police report they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.

The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then located numerous other vandalized cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement report initial examinations suggest the substance was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no indication as to where it came from; officials are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they commented.

City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.

An important political figure said the vandalism rendered him speechless and needed to be addressed quickly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
