US Military Operation on Caracas Raises Anxieties of Potential Danish Territory Takeover.

Recent American strike in the South American nation and the capture of its president have sparked worry regarding America's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the ex-president's base have reportedly turned their attention to the strategically important landmass in the wake of the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Provocative Messages and Official Backlash

Merely hours following the commencement of the Venezuelan campaign, a well-known right-wing commentator, who is the spouse of a senior presidential adviser, posted a symbolic map. The picture showed Greenland draped with the American flag, with the single-word message: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to annex the mineral-rich land, which is a part of the NATO alliance, triggered swift and strong condemnation from Denmark's representatives.

"We are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is also the Arctic's and our security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the United States collaborate to ensure security in the Arctic."

The ambassador further highlighted that the kingdom had significantly boosted its defence spending recently, allocating a substantial amount specifically for Northern and North Atlantic security. "Furthermore, we expect full recognition for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he emphasized.

Political Appointments and Geopolitical Interests

The situation were additionally exacerbated by the previous naming of a US state governor as a representative to Greenland. The governor had publicly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "honour" to serve in a volunteer role to "bring Greenland into the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this representative commended the administration's actions, linking it to the broader "war on drugs."

Since assuming office, the American leader has repeatedly alarmed European allies with his stated interest in Greenland. The island is considered critically strategic for defence and potential mineral exploitation. It already houses the most northerly US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a notable television appearance, the president declined to rule out the resorting to armed action to gain control of Greenland. This stance comes amid growing great-power competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Tensions and Local Resistance

In reaction to this constant "rhetoric" of threats, Danish intelligence service took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of both Greenland delivered a joint and forceful rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a complex picture. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's inhabitants desire self-rule from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously little to no desire to join the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare independence for over a decade.

Analyst Assessment: A Plausible Threat?

Some analysts are increasingly re-evaluating the possibility of such a move. One thinktank analyst specializing in military analysis admitted she had previously dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "currently not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a few hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could do anything about it," she concluded.
