Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
